Thank you, Alain! The issue seems to have been fixed by rewriting the
xf:select1 with xf:copy rather than xf:item/xf:value (which was technically
incorrect anyway because my values contained internal spaces). It does seem
a bit slower now, so I may end up offloading the instance data onto the
server side.
