This is a known bug in xfce; already present in dapper. Hopefully,
they fix it in the upcoming xfce4.4 rc.
It is fixed in edgy as of yesterday, but is this the same problem? If it is the login screen is handled by gdm
not xfdesktop which draws the wallpaper only.
