Hi there is a new proposed tool for adding new printers and configuring existing ones. It is the python/gtk app that is used in FC6. It is in universe currently but if feedback is good it should get in main and on the CD
$apt-get install system-config-printer please discuss issues with it here but file bugs in LP if you find some.
