Software updater (update-manager) has been broken for a while. Its not
fixed for other distros but not xubuntu. If you install
gir1.2-unity-5.0 that fixes the problem.

umm - do you mean it is fixed for other distros? If so which ones?

What version of Xubuntu are you talking about?

Florian,

I had a separate chat with Rob (Rob is testing budgie-remix 16.10
and also the other official community distros) about this matter -
according to rob "software updater (...really update-manager) has been
broken for some time, both on ubuntu and ubuntu gnome 16.10."

So I would infer xubuntu 16.10 is 'affected'. Suggest the real fix
should be for update-manager to have a dependency on gir1.2-unity-5.0
- at the moment it is a "suggests"

Florian,

OK, I am testing xubuntu 16.10, ubuntu 16.10 and ubuntu-gnome 16.10.
Update-manager has failed (crashed)for quite some time in xubuntu 16.10 and ubuntu-gnome. On xubuntu, after the crash apport starts but says bug has already been reported.

David's comments above are spot on.
