The difference is that: (a) Metadata allowed W3C to use their name in this way. (b) The term "metadata" used by the W3C is not easily confused with the company "Metadata", as the two are unrelated terms. (c) The term "metadata" used by the W3C is not used by the W3C to sometimes mean one thing (the company) and sometimes another (companies like the company); indeed it is always used to mean an unrelated concept, "data about data". (d) Metadata have not asked W3C to stop using their name. (e) The term "metadata" predates the company and specifications have used it for years before the company was created. (f) The term "metadata" is well established in the industry as being a generic term for "data about data", which is how the W3C use it. None of these apply in the XUL case: (a) You use XUL without any permission from mozilla.org. (b) People are frequently confused by your use of the term "XUL". (c) You use "XUL" sometimes to mean Mozilla's UI language and sometimes to mean languages like Mozilla's UI language. (d) Mozilla.org (through Bart), the XUL editors (through me and Ben), and even XUL programmers and users (e.g. on this mailing list, on Mozillazine, and on other sites), have asked you to stop using the term "XUL" in this confusing and trademark-violating way repeatedly for months. (e) The term "XUL" was made up specifically for Mozilla and you started using it after it was well established. (f) The term "XUL" is well established in the industry to mean Mozilla's UI language, which is not how you use it. -- Ian Hickson )\._.,--....,'``. fL U+1047E /, _.. \ _\ ;`._ ,. http://index.hixie.ch/ `._.-(,_..'--(,_..'`-.;.' ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Perforce Software.
