I happened to caught in a debate related to XUL recently without knowing. Few days ago, I was looking for some good forum where I can share my idea about XUL. As usual, I googled this topic and found a forum, so I posted a message with my email address included. Because most forum programs these days notify the thread owner when they get replies, I assumed it would do the same job, so I waited.. It has been passed few days and got no any sort of email, so that was it. That is the first half of this story.
Today I googled again to find another forum, and guess what. I found my message caught in a cross-fire at some website~ It is funny because all I've ever done was just posting a message on a forum at http://gmane.org, but later I found out that this website actually relays messages to various mailists, so the message I posted was actually sent to all the subscribers of "Project: XUL - XML UI Language"'s mailing list. wow~ http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=6445471&forum_id=32541 Pretty interesting things are going on there, especially some debate related to the appropriateness of the use of the term, 'XUL', for general purpose which is definitely disconnected from the Mozilla connotation. Gerald Bauer, the main guy of this group, is arguing that he can use the term 'XUL' in general sense.
XUL stands for XML UI language and can refer to many different dialects similar to XML query language or XML schema language. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=6336485&forum_id=32541
And he asked me to find other forums if I want to talk specifically about 'Mozilla XUL'.
If it is as you propose that you are only intersted in Mozilla"s XUL than I suggest that you and Sundew move the discussion to the Mozilla XUL Developers Group @ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mozilla-xul or to one of the Mozilla sponsered newsgroups.
If I'm wrong, please help me to corrent. Is he saying that topic related to 'Mozilla XUL' is too specific for the maillist , at the same time he is saying 'XUL' can be used as general term? Above all, since the mailinglist deals with general 'XUL', why can't one start a discussion about specific "Mozilla's XUL" by the way? It's like a professor of Aerospace dept. saying to a student that: "We are focusing on the airplanes in various forms in this class. So if you want to talk about F-117, I suggest, you have to get out of here." A guy who can program, can be logical, too. I know Gerald quite awhile with his great project, Venus Application Publisher for JNLP. Maybe you guys became too sensitive at this topic and loosing more important things. hope you can find a good point to wrap up this wasteful debates. thank you.
