I finally decided to use my laptop on an external display. I managed to
get it working thanks to Nvidia's configuration tool. But the
experience leaves a lot to be desired or a lot of unanswered questions.

My laptop, a Clevo D901C with Nvidia FX1600M graphics. On the keyboard
the are a bunch of "Functions". "Fn-F2" will dim the LCD to almost off,
"Fn-F8" of "Fn-F9" will adjust the brightness of the LCD, they all work
fine. "Fn-F7" is suppose to switch the Graphics display to the external
dvi connection. It doesn't work.

So, the only way to switch the output was to configure xorg.conf to
direct the output to the external connection.

Now my questions:

1) Is it possible to get "Fn-F7" working properly, and how?
2) If not possible, can the xorg.conf be changed without restarting the
xserver?
3) If not possible, can the xserver be restarted without logging out?
4) If not possible, can the "logout - login" be performed similar to a
re-boot (no interaction)?

Thanks for any help,

Paul
