OK. I've just stripped the -g data from libX11.
strip -x /usr/lib/X11/libX11.so.4
Now gdb is able to attach to X11 programs without crashing.
Maybe gnome's bug-buddy will now be able to produce some
real information the next time some snv_85 gnome program
crashes...
