I used to get an "inappropriate ioctl() error message when trying to call the "newer" (post-Solaris2.3_HW10'1994) VIS_GETIDENTIFIER ioctl (ioctl(fd, VIS_GETIDENTIFIER, &visId) against a /dev/fb link pointing to a node created by gfxp.
I have all Solaris-SPARC releases down to 1.1.1 myself (except 2.0-2.2, because those didn't run on my SS20). I will now monitor the changes in <sun.h>, <sunIo.h> <sys/visual_io.h>, <sys/fbio.h> over that early period from 1991 to 1997. Today's personal exercise is to convert the DDK's Xsun-module for CG6 (/usr/openwin/./server/modules/ddxSUNWcg6.so.1) to the Xorg loadmod interface. I get it loaded by Xorg, but the screen is still in text mode. I must be passing incorrect arguments.
