XC-APPGROUP might remain useful; a simple google shows some people trying to keep xrx/Broadway alive (I hope they succeed, I've found it useful, when it wasn't broken). And one of the posts mentions its use by certain window managers or other apps that want to use it as a different sort of way of reparenting or controlling another app.
