I'm not super keen on the performance ins and outs of the T1 and T2, but since the T1 only has one FPU and the T2 has eight, I think using a T1 for gaming consoles or workstations would be out. The T2 or the Rock (whenever it is out) might be alright, but the T2 is currently pretty pricey (at least, Sun's servers that use it are) and I'm sure the Rock will be even more so with 16 cores... =( (maybe there will be models with fewer cores?) That said, anyone know how much that ATX board costs? I'll try to find out also.
Since ATI/AMD has been pretty open with their specs lately, I'm guessing that focusing on their graphics chipsets would be the best way to go. I have to say Sun's workstation cases are excellent - the best I've ever seen. Do they manufacture these or do you think it would be possible to buy the parts from the original manufacturer? Not that important ... but it would be cool. Another thing that could be nice for gaming: the T2 has eight stream processing units, making it kinda similar to the Cell processor used in the PS3. Someone that knows more about these processors care to comment? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
