There is no such thing as zero cost. If Sun was to include those drivers,
it would cost Sun time and resources in verifying we were complying with
our contracts, that they were properly built and packaged, that they were
ported to each new Xorg ABI change, and maintained/fixed for customers with
support contracts. Sun management decided that those costs outweighed the
benefits, and when costs were being slashed all over, were not something they
wanted to expend the shrinking amount of available resources on.
The only way for it to be zero cost to Sun is to do what was done, allow you
to offer those drivers on your own, and not to take on the support burden of
them.
It's unfortunate and sad for the people who still have that old hardware,
but it's the harsh reality of the business decisions made.
