I'm trying to install Opensolaris Dev b134 on my Dell Precision M6500
laptop. Unfortunately, it is equipped with a ATI FirePro M7740 graphics
card.

This card seems to be supported - in some way - by the 'radeon' and
'radeonhd' Xorg driver, but the 2D performance is terrible: window
movement is lagging and jerking, which makes normal work quite
impossible. Even using a text mode editor in a normal sized terminal
(80x25) is painful.

I tried different 'AccelMethod' options like EXA (does not work; no
DRI), XAA ('not supported on this chipset generation').

Even 'shadowFB' shouldn't be such slow. There is no difference in speed
between 'radeonfb', 'radeon' and 'vesa'.

I've got the same issue under Debian Sid (Xorg 7.5). I'll get 2D
acceleration when using EXA and DRI (the kernel driver needs binary
firmware for that).

Do I have a chance to get acceptable 2D performance (don't need 3D)
under OpenSolaris or does it need DRI?

Is there a timeline for radeon DRI (just a hint when it may be
available)?


I really don't want to spend a few hundred euros for a nVidia Quadro
board just to get some 2D (with a closed source driver).
