I've noticed something else as well on both the opensolaris console display and the Xserver display. The Vertical Sync polarity for my LCD panel is incorrect. It is being set to "P" (+) when it should be "N" (-).
I'm not sure whether this is contributing to the problem or not. And is it a known issue that when the X server is stopped, opensolaris must be rebooted to get the display back ? Whenever I stop the X server my monitor starts complaining that that it is set to a "non optimal" setting. And should I take this discussion to a different thread than "Wont boot up to GDM using Live CD" ? Refarding the console display, is there anyway to have it use a different resolution ? I've poked around through docs and google searches but haven't found an answer to that question. Maybe the "screen" bootenv.rc property has some syntax that allows one to set the resolution ?
