Hi Bruno,

It is about paper manuscripts with "authoryear" references style (in text):

\documentclass[authoryear]{elsarticle} together with \usepackage{natbib}
typically.

In such case, the older reference displays *in the main text* "and et al." :

"\cite{yade:doc2} made a great code" would give "Smilauer and et al. made a
great code" as you got it

However, the references list, such as the one in
https://www.yade-dem.org/doc/publications.html would still be fine.

Using "and others" in the BibTeX entry allows to solve the first behavior (the
main text) without modifying what appears in the reference list. It will still
be "Smilauer et al." in the reference list

"and others" is indeed normally recognized by BibTeX, see

BibTex entries for 2015 doc. To avoid Smilauer and et al in manuscripts

I can't reproduce the problem Jérôme.
The references diplayed in [1] do not have "and et al." although they are
generated by bibtex.
I also had these references included in standard latex toolchains and it never
gave "and et al.".
The problem is to fix on your side it seems. How are you compiling? Which
bibtex style?
Bruno

Dumb me! I should read twice.
Now I understand the problem Smilauer and et al.
Still the solution is not right. We must really display "Smilauer et al.".
Bibtex experts around?

Hi Jérôme,
I don't understand this commit. Why do you want to avoid "et al."?? It is a
very well accepted convention.
Anyway, it is too late to change it, the document has been online for months.
It appears with "et al." using the DOI
(https://dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.34045), for instance.
Could you please revert?
Bruno
