I discovered that running this:
run-escript yade ./biaxialSmooth.py
produces a different error message:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "../yade", line 241, in runScript
execfile(script,globals())
File "./biaxialSmooth.py", line 9, in <module>
from msFEM2D import MultiScale
ImportError: No module named msFEM2D
So finally importing esys.escript worked.
