Variable stiffness makes me wonder if it is not something linked to
the well known issue in hypoelastic models, see e.g.

It doesnt mean variable stiffness is wrong in itself. You can define
thermodynamicaly consistent non-linear elasticity... or not.
I don't know how HM is on this aspect.
