@Rob Despite the fact that it is unintuitive, horizon is intentionally designed to be able to create a volume without a volume type. This exactly matches the cinder api, which permits the user to create a volume without specifying the volume type.
@Sam "No volume type" is not the same thing as "Default type". Depending on how cinder is setup, they may be the same, but that is not necessarily the case; when you select "No volume type", it may yield a volume whose attributes do not correspond to any particular volume type. Also relevant to this discussion is [1] , which is a WIP change to horizon to display descriptions for volume types that are defined in cinder, including "No volume type".
