JC, have you turned off the firewall that comes with XP? Its something that is automatically turned on, and can affect the ports that you need opened to use Messenger.
Go back and make sure the XP built in firewall is turned off. If it is off, have you tried it with your firewall down? Or have you taken the correct steps to make sure that you have deleted yahoo correctly, not only just using add/remove programs, but completely remove All signs of yahoo???
