I am leaning strongly towards option #2 so that we would know if compilation 
breaks between patches.

One question (or thought), do you think, any hdfs or hadoop-common change on 
trunk could cause compilation issues for hbase-2.x profile? In that case, would 
those patches have a problem in getting committed?

Completely agree that for test, default profile can be set to hbase1 by 
default. Also, by default, hadoop releases to be built for hbase-1.
