1. If you can show me an example of an active service to start with, I'll 
gladly make it active only

2. We're relying on operations to be idempotent: whoever creates last wins, 
whoever deletes last wins. There's some race conditions on cleanup if there's a 
change between a read and a delete, but that's what you get in a world without 
transactions.
