Dear cdes After speaking to some comrades (Bobby and Shawn) it was felt that the Action Forum needs to meet to continue the campaign against high food prices. Cosatu has adopted the problematic position that the government committee on high prices (which will operate for 6 months and then report back) as a victory and by implication will assist in the fight against high prices. The people are starving now and the committee merely postpones the fight (perhaps for them to concentrate on the elections). Further a focus on VAT (getting more basic foods exempted from Vat) actually turns the question away from the fact that the capitalist class are the ones behinds the artificially inflated high food prices.
We call for a meeting of the Action Forum against High prices on Monday 20th October 2008 at 530pm at Community House. Please mobilise among activists as far as you can so that the campaign can advance to the next phase. Already there are communities in the Eastern cape who are taking up the campaign (there will be a march in East London on the 23th Oct to Shoprite and Pick 'n Pay to demand the price of basic food to be halved).
