Subject: The ANC is a bombela.

Cadre,

The issue of leadership has been a challenge that has been overemphasised in
the movement and it has been an issue that has been taken seriously by
comrades. One important assertion is the occurrences of Polokwane
conference, which had high level of concentration on leadership, which had
showed effects of degeneration and diverting of comrades as it was to
conclude its business. Furthermore, leadership has been an issue which was
raised sharply in councils and conferences and it has not been necessarily
taken seriously by comrades, as a result contending with the plight and
interests of the toiling masses of our people has been something at a
distance.

In its introduction the document begins by saying "In this process, it is
natural and necessary that there should be contest among individuals and
lobbying by their supporters. Our challenge is to ensure healthy and
comradely competition, so that we emerge from this process united, with a
leadership suited to the current phase. On the other hand, if persued in
dark corners, and in a spirit of self-interested sectionalism, the process
would degenerate into debilitating contests which divide the movement and
divert it from the major task of social transformation. It could also be
easily exploited by forces of counter-revolution"[1]. While it is thus, the
National General Council (NGC) held at Port Elizabeth prepared itself to pay
attention to the following noted issues:

a. Ensure that all members and cadres of the movement understand the
character and nature of the ANC as a revolutionary movement and their
responsibilities as cadres of this movement.

b. Build a common understanding of the present context in which we
operate - nationally, on the continent and globally and the current tasks of
the ANC as leader of the national democratic forces and an agent for change;

c. A common understanding of the contending views in our society, the
motive forces and how as a movement we engage with these views in our
society and more effectively mobilise and organise the motive forces (NGC of
ANC; 2000).

Having viewed the congress documents of 1997 and council of 2000 it is again
to reflect on the currently mushrooming of the SHIKOTA and perhaps avoid
raising more questions than answers. I am saying this because of the two
important platforms of our movement. Firstly, the 50th conference noted in
it discussion document that there are people who would see themselves
leading and not accept to be lead. It was also a time were "through the eye
of the needle" was developed. That period was characterised by high levels
of leadership contestations, because there were questions raised about "who
should lead after Mandela?" many cdes saw opportunity brought forth by the
"boiling pot ". It was again that period were we differed highly on the
implementation of GEAR as the alliance partners.

Now, having saw all that we then decided to bury the problems and challenges
that we assumed they have been confronting us for a very long time since we
got in government. We called for the NGC which as noted above mentioned
objectives it had to implement. Such problems include the use of malicious
character assassinations, sidelining of cdes, harbouring personal
differences into political differences and etc. the NGC was termed as
follows "a large political school for the entire organisation"[2]. It was
able to bring together in one forum delegates from ANC branches, regional
and provincial structures, members of the National Executive Committee,
veterans, members of parliament, Alliance and MDM delegates and cadres
working across a number of sectors.

Secondly, the NGC had to advance its strategic objectives noted by the 50th
conference at Mafikeng, the initial confrontations that we experienced both
internally and externally. The problems had one or the other affected the
ANC and its membership both positively and negatively. The challenge of Cold
war states collapses and the emergence of globalisation in late 1980s made
it possible for the ANC to see great leaps and trajectories in the political
arena of country. It was a point were the West took a position to feed all
developing and under-developed states structural adjustment programmes as a
way to manage both the political life and political mobility. The emergence
of the 1996 class project started.

Now the 1996 class project focused more on the happenings of globalisation
and its manifestations and forgot the down troddens. They also ensured that
neo - liberal policies are implemented. They the saw a need to further
position themselves in high positions and again, forgot the masses. The
concentration was on the privatisation and down-sizing and right sizing in
the pursue of corporate identity, they retrenched many workers from mines,
factory floors, shops and etc. this class also focused on the material gains
that were produced by the movement.

Central to the SHIKOTA mushrooming after a careful analysis of the
background of 1996 class project, one then find the following in terms of
the establishment of SHIKOTA:

1. It is characterised by people who have a challenge is to ensure
healthy and comradely competition.
2. Lack of defining and exercising unity within the organisation.
3. They persued each other in dark corners, and in a spirit of
self-interested sectionalism, and
4. They have degenerate into debilitating contests which has divided
the movement and diverted to a so called "CONVENSION"
5. They have moved away from the major task of social transformation.
6. It could also be easily be exploited by forces of counter-revolution

The SHIKOTA depends most on the downtrodden to survive than any other thing
based on their formation. These are most cruel people ever the movement have
harboured under the wings of the ANC. It is fortunate that the ANC has been
a truly a multi organ that has been contested from all angles. It is an
organ that many attempted to destroy it not for purposes of making it to
die, rather destroy for purposes of making it a personal property. One thing
great about it there has been many attempts and these attempts failed. It is
unfortunate that the 1996 class project in exist they fin it much better to
go and form another party because they have accumulated from the gains of
the ANC.

These are the "patriotic bourgeoisies" who were created to be foes of the
poor and the working class and become companion to capital. These are the
cdes who were defended during the emergence of these politics; politics of
the stomach. Since April 1994 the character of the ANC has changed.
Theoretically the ANC is pro-poor and biased to the downtrodden (Mojaki;
2008). In actual terms these are the people who made the ANC to be
differently observed by the poor and working class. These are the people who
when they were communicate the problems of the organisation they then turn a
blind eye on issues that need their attention.

Unfortunately what happened now is not new; instead it requires that we
repair from the damages that occurred during the presence of the 1996 class
project. This class has made it course possible for the movement and its
members not to forget the sailing challenges in sea of democracy. Rather, to
remember the many others who wanted to steal gold in our ranks. It is
unfortunate that all they have is themselves and not the masses. They
assumed that our masses will soon forget. The wheel of history has tracks
and recordings of all the happenings in the movement. Some think that the
ANC and its strategic alliance will soon not able to move beyond these
leadership challenges.

[1] During the 50th National Conference of the ANC held at Mafikeng this
discussion document was used "challenges of leadership in the current
phase". This discussion document was prepared mainly to deal with the
challenges of leadership crisis that confronted the movement at that time.

[2] National General Council that was held in Port Elizabeth from the 11 -
15 July 2000, placed emphasis on the unity of the organisation and it was
termed the large political school, simply because it was to reaffirm all
cadres and members of the movement their responsibilities in the movement.
