Comrade Aphiwe, all of this justifies a need for media appeals tribunal.

To prove that common sense has evaporated in the newsroom, on Friday (May 8)
Sowetan front page carried a headline that "ZCC boss is my dad," but mother
doubts sanity of boy who insists Lekganyane is his father (sic).
Sowetan journalist Cecil Motsepe did not have first-hand knowledge of the
sanity of the jailbird whose mother doubts his outrageous claims.
But Sowetan without verifying any of the young man's obscure claims that Bishop
Barnabas Lekganyane is his father, went ahead to publish the story to harm
Lekganyane's good name and reputation in society.

Upon realising that it has came close to be forsaken by some readers for going
off at a foolish tangent, on Monday (May 11) Sowetan ran an editorial "An
unhappy task" to justify the so-called "the painful decision" to publish false
and unverified story in such a sensational manner unbefitting of a
professional. This is not only cheap tabloid journalism but plain abuse of
press freedom at the shallowness of public interest. Needless to say
that some Christians were offended and armed themselves with the Bible to say
"Lying lips conceal hatred, and whoever utters slander is a fool" (Proverbs
10:18).

With all of this, it's also worth knowing that the sobriety of senior
magistrate Daniel Thulare was patently questionable as it's very unusual for
summons to be issued in a hearsay maintenance claim without inviting any
corroboration by a reliable witness or the young man's mother.

Not to mention that Sowetan took a similar approach when one attention-seeking
woman made unfounded claims about then state president Kgalema Motlanthe. This
new culture of walking blindfold through a minefield is making a mockery of
media freedom, suggesting a need to revisit the lack of probity and
self-control model abused by media practitioners.

And the establishment of a media appeals tribunal remains the only way forward.

Dear activists/politicians/members of society

Some of the apparent stupidity might be calculated means to achieve what
is unachievable. For example these editors such as (Martin) are
attempting to incite our people and woke up a dead snake in the name of
freedom of speech. We need not to reduce our intellect to neither
entertaining nor debating these issues…actually by getting into an
argument you have already lost it.

Al gore once said "When you have the facts on your side, argue the
facts. When you have the law on your side, argue the law. When you have
neither, then people howl."  So this editor is merely howling. And the
problem with howling is that no matters how laud you can unleash it,
that will not make it to have value than blazing hot air.

Plato also once said “"The partisan, when he is engaged in a dispute,
cares nothing about the rights of the question, but is anxious only to
convince his hearers of his own assertions."
