*SABC Board Must Go!* *4 June 2009*
The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] fully supports the mass action that was embarked upon by actors, producers, writers and unions under the banner of the SABC Crisis Coalition against the SABC’s failure to pay local producers. This mass action is a reflection of the broader embedded financial crisis faced by the public broadcaster and which requires urgent attention in rescuing it from deeper financial crisis and mismanagement under the current ‘illegitimate’ Board. The YCLSA is disgusted and disappointed by the intentions of some Alliance leaders who are engaged in a clandestine and opportunistic manner to save and protect the current Board by replacing those Board members who have resigned. This is the worst form of opportunism and an insult in our efforts of building a truly public broadcaster that is representative of all the sectors of our society. We want to say unapologetically that the entire Board is responsible for the mess the SABC has become, and therefore the entire Board should go. As the YCLSA, we will be engaging the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications on our call for the entire Board to be dissolved and for parliament to start a process towards constituting a new Board which enjoys public support and confidence before the end of the current year.
