*YCL Statement on the resignation of SABC Board member Ashwin Trikamjee!* *17 June 2009*
The Young Communist League [uFasimba] is thrilled and excited by the long overdue resignation of the factionally appointed SABC Board member Ashwin Trikamjee. The latest resignation of Trikamjee signals an end to the abuse of public office to solicit loyalty and dispense patronage for narrow, self-centred political ambitions and lust for power. This latest resignation further expose the entire Board’s members embedded politics of stomach and loyalty to an individual over public institutions as demonstrated by the Mbeki administration over the past 10 years of his stewardship. This should serve as a lesson to the new administration and the people of our country of how one powerful individual can abuse his position for his self-fulfilling personal glory and ambitions. We call on the parliamentary portfolio committee on Communications to move with speed with the process of constituting a new Board in accordance with the Broadcasting Act and there should be no ‘Smuts Ngonyama’ evil hand to undermine this parliamentary process which is democratic and representative of our people. We also urge parliament to conduct a forensic audit on the finances of the SABC and also make sure that those who used the SABC’s money recklessly and irresponsible are being held liable. A big institution like the SABC, its revenue cannot be squandered and nothing being done to recover the money. The YCL will support the new Board towards it mammoth task of cleansing and rebuilding the SABC as truly public broadcaster without political manipulation and influence.
