*Do it for Nelson Mandela – Implement the Freedom Charter!* *Friday 17 July 2009*
The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] joins the people of South Africa and the entire world in wishing former President Nelson Mandela, our political icon, one of the greatest heroes of the South African revolution a very happy 91st birthday! We are excited that we are a youth wing of the South African Communist Party [SACP] that was with you in the trenches during the hostile conditions of apartheid and illegality. We are also excited that Young Communists leaders such as Joe Slovo, Ahmed Kathrada and Duma Nokwe inspired and shaped your political convictions. The Rivonia Treason Trial Speech continues to be a political font in our ongoing tasks of achieving the strategic objectives of the ANC-led Alliance as encapsulated in the Freedom Charter. In your own words ‘The Freedom Charter provides for the nationalization of mines, banks and monopoly industry, because big monopolies are owned by one race only, and without such nationalization racial domination would be perpetuated despite the spread of political power’. This citation remains relevant and calls for action given the selective interpretation and distortion of the Freedom Charter by our leaders guided by their entrenched economic interests and selfish appetite to be flirty rich. As the YCLSA we strongly believe that the best birthday gift that should be given to you by the ANC, an organisation that you have dedicated your entire life and served with distinction for 67 years is the radical implementation of the Freedom Charter to the latter. On behalf of the YCLSA, on this wonderful occasion of your 91st birthday, we pledge and commit ourselves to work tirelessly for the implementation of *ALL *the clauses of the Freedom Charter. We are conscious of the fact that there are those who are occupying leading positions in our organizations who are whetting for power and collaborating with white monopoly capital to cheat the revolution and the Freedom Charter for their class interests and power. We are convinced that a detour or a compromise on the Freedom Charter will be a betrayal to your generation’s struggles and service to the revolution. The youth of South Africa, if needs be are prepared to die for the Freedom Charter! *Nelson Mandela Day* Saturday 18 July 2009, we call on young people especially the working class and the poor youth to honour Mandela by joining the 67 minutes of lending a hand in our communities on Nelson Mandela Day. We further call on the Department of Home Affairs to open its doors and allow young people to volunteer and assist as part of ensuring that the bottlenecks and frustrations related to application and processing of ID’s are addressed. It is our contention and belief that ID’s play an important role in one’s socio-economic life as opposed to the apartheid regime. The Department of Home Affairs should seize this opportunity in honour of Mandela’s service to the people of our country and see to it that our people have ID’s so that their can enjoy the fruits of our freedom and have access to banking, employment, social grants and a better life. Happy Birthday, Comrade Madiba!
