*YCLSA WOMENS DAY MESSAGE*

*08 August 2009*

The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) salutes the women of
our country on this important occasion of the 53rd anniversary of the
women’s march which was held on the 9th of August 1956. This day in history
is the day that brave heroines took to the streets defying the unjust pass
law encapsulated in the system of apartheid. This anniversary is taking
place in the midst of the global financial crisis, the rising gap between
the rich and the poor, the skyrocketing cost of living in post apartheid
Capitalist South Africa; where we are blatantly told to fasten our belts but
the CEO’s are continuously being remunerated for marginalising workers

As the YCLSA we call on the working class and the poor women of our country
to challenge the dominant Capitalist system which perpetuates poverty;
hunger; diseases; income disparities; crime; child labour and patriarchy.
The women of our country should be inspired by the revolutionary sacrifices
made by Ruth First; Lillian Ngoyi and others in building a just, humane and
better country and the world.

On this call of the 53rd anniversary of women day, we call for the provision
of free sanitary towels for the working class and poor women. We strongly
believe this will ease the burden created as a result of the commodification
of these necessities by the market fundamentalists.

We also salute our unsung heroines of today that continue to single hand
idly head households through these trying economic times. We salute the
women that brave the cold and wake in the early hours of the morning to
ensure food is put on the table for their families. We take into cognisance
the legislative framework that has been put into place to address gender
inequalities in all spheres of the economy, but more needs to be done with
respect to implementation.

There needs to be a policy shift that favours the poor that are faced with
this monstrous economic predicament known as Recession, the defiant child
given birth to by Capitalism. Women should continue to fight for their
economic emancipation and show strength as they always have.......as the
women in the march of 1956 said to JG Strydom “wathinta abafazi,
wathint’imbkodo”
