The cdes who are calling for the returns of cars and for ministers to be
driven in Tatas and Toyotas are leaving in utopia. In fact this is cloud
cuckoo land stuff! Why do you think a Lexus would be cheaper than a BMW
7-series? I expect this line of argument from DA, the contortionist of truth
and twisters of logic.

We can't afford to have ministers dying on the roads (like student leaders)
because of cheaper cars!

Having said that, I think there is a need though for government to develop a
uniform approach on this matter. A pool of cars to be leased from government
garage would be one of the options.

ministers' expensive cars

The issue comrades, is quite simple.
Blade was advised to get a car that met with the standards required in
order to successfully and safely fulfil his appointed function as a
minister.

The BMW that was chosen met with all of these requirements. Now the
only argument it seems is that a car that met all of these functions
including that of power and fuel economy could be met for a cheaper
price. To me that is doing exactly what this comrade accuses Dominic
of doing "Comrade Dominic must not come and romanticise or be
sentimental about the matter of cars".

The truth is. The purchase of this car will not empty government of
its coffers, what people are complaining about is that expenditure
should be targeted to education or heath etc. These people are
shouting in the wrong direction, it is the finance minister who
directs government spending to different area's more money should have
been allocated in this regard. If a cheaper vehicle was bought that
money would still be available for that ministerial office as part of
their annual expenses and probably would have resulted in a loosening
of slacks elsewhere.

What is important is that lessons are learned and that in future there
should be vehicles bought as part of a car pool that meet the
requirements and can be acquisitioned at a lower price (bulk buying).
Of course I am sure the DA would then moan about what cars were
selected for that. In this way it will have all the benefits that are
known and recognised by other countries but it will also mean silly
debates like this will not fill the media when there are important
issues like reactionary firing of hard working soldiers

However, in light of what has happened I am grateful that Blade has
apologised for the purchase purely because he should have acknowledged
the fact that there was potential for the trivialising of the matter
and his apology has acted to show that.
