*YCL will oppose deunionisation of the military* * *
*16 September 2009* The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) will use “any [political] means necessary” to stop the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Lindiwe Sisulu, to ban unions in the military. We see this action as a means to undermine the constitution as the law of the land. We do not believe that the action undertaken by the soldiers in their strike action last week constitutes a ban in the union. Worse is the proposal to replace unions with a toothless Military Service Commission than can only serve to be a sweetheart of the Minister, whilst workers demands are put in the backburner. This action, if it succeeds, can only serve as precedent for future banning of the trade-unions in all other sectors. Our interpretation is that if workers in other sectors strike and turn violent, they can easily be banned from being part of the unions. We did not know that we were campaigning for a two-thirds majority so that it can be a stick against workers and the poor. It is a fallacy to suggest that unions are political structures, and defies the dictum that man is in anyway a political dictum. This obsession with banning the unions must stop, and work should commence in addressing the needs and interests of the workers and the poor. We want to send a warning to the Minister and all of those who seek to ban unions that we will do everything in our powers to stop them.
