While appreciating the increase of salaries for soldiers by the President I
still believe that much in redressing damages done by both apartheid and the
1994 democratic breakthrough should also be done. To count just a few, *a
number of liberation soldiers are out of the defence force because of the
nagative and reactive mentality they found there that was never eradicated
by our own generals, housing has been a problem for soldiers, new recruits
into the SANDF are not compatible with an envisaged transformation that is
espoused by the government and the ruling party to be precise, there is a
conscious initiative of replacing 'old soldiers' (i.e. former TBVC and the
so-called Non-Statutory Forces) by the 'new generation', there is a
conscious selective promotion that does not consider the former TBVC and the
NSF, there is a lack of interdepartmental strategy for soldiers who
might want to migrate to other government departments, rank progressive and
capacity building is a privilege rather than a right, there is a loss of all
data of ex-combatants, relegation of the veteran's to one department and not
having departmental exchange has ensured that a lot of data of former
soldier who never intergrated is lost within the system etc.*

*These are just some of the challenges which I hope are captured in the
Defence Commission. I agree with COSATU when it says this Commissions
cannot be a substitute for a progressive trade union in the SANDF, this is
where I believe it is needed most. DON'T TELL US ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES OR
ABOUT 'THIN LINES BETWEEN MUTINY AND A STRIKE FOR SOLDIERS' SOILDER SHOULD
BUILD A DEFENCE THAT CONFORMS TO BOTH ITS INTERNAL AND INTERNATIONAL
DYNAMICS. *
*IN ALL WE ARE EXPECTING A DEFENCE THAT WILL SET A TREND LOCALLY AND
GLOBALLY. *

*International trends have shown that *
