SACP dubs Malema 'the new Hitler'

THE ANC Youth League said yesterday it had "closed the debate" on its leader Julius Malema allegedly making millions off the government, while the SACP in the Western Cape likened him to a modern-day Hitler and a demagogue who looted state resources.

Youth league spokesman Floyd Shivambu said they would not be dealing with any further queries regarding Malema's private business interests.

The league believed "misrepresentations and rumours" had been "adequately clarified".

"We will in this regard not entertain any further enquiry as we have a responsibility and bigger tasks of championing young people's interest while mobilising them behind the vision of the ANC."

Shivambu said media reports about Malema had "re-energised the organisation to fight with more vigour, determination and vigilance to champion its socio-economic transformation causes, especially the nationalisation of mines".

But the Western Cape SACP said that by accusing the leaders of the ANC's leftist allies of leaking information to the media about his business dealings, Malema was using the same tactics employed in Nazi Germany by Hitler, who had besmirched communists when he sought right-wing support for his destructive programmes.

"Malema, as a right-wing chauvinist demagogue like Hitler, makes noise appealing to the emotions of ordinary poor people in order to advance the agenda to loot state resources in a very poor province and municipalities in Limpopo," said SACP provincial secretary Khaya Magaxa.

It was "counterproductive" and unethical for political leadership - responsible for changing the lives of the vulnerable - to enrich themselves through business.

He warned that business deals by politicians were susceptible to corruption.

"Therefore politicians cannot be referees and players. Hence one will have to choose whether he or she wants to be involved in business or politics. It cannot be both without being corruption," Magaxa said.

Malema made a number of allegations while attempting to clear his name, claiming he had intelligence information "proving" the existence of an SA Revenue Service hitlist targeting lifestyle audits of top politicians who had supported President Jacob Zuma's rise to power.

The Star can reveal that the document was compiled by a former Sars employee facing criminal charges related to rhino poaching.

Michael Peega, 34, of Pretoria, approached The Star last year claiming he was part of a secret Sars intelligence unit.

Part of its brief had been to investigate the lifestyles and tax status of senior Zuma supporters in 2007, when the ANC succession struggle was raging.

Opposition parties are now demanding answers on how Malema came to be in possession of classified state information.

Cope president Mosiuoa Lekota said they would demand an explanation from Zuma and State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele.

"The revelation by Mr Malema that he is in possession of a state intelligence document suggests this private citizen has free access to what otherwise is state property from which all private citizens are excluded," said Lekota.

Ministry of State Security spokesman Brian Dube said they were not aware of such a list.

Malema couldn't be reached for comment yesterday.
