ANC STATEMENT ON 100 DAYS TO SOCCER WORLD CUP KICK-OFF

The African National Congress (ANC) today (2 March 2010) joins many South
Africans and foreign nationals in rallying the nation to celebrate 100 days to
soccer world cup kick-off. We also congratulate FIFA - particularly the 2010
Local Organising Committee - for a job well done in preparing the country to
host the world’s most prestigious sporting event.

Not only have our stadiums been built to world-class standards, but also our
infrastructure, which includes our roads, is undergoing a massive facelift – a
legacy that will remain beyond 2010. The multitudes of foreign visitors set to
descend on our country will bring the much-needed revenue to boost the local
tourism and hospitality industries. With 80% of money raised by FIFA during the
world cup event set to be ploughed back to football, this should augur well for
soccer development.

We are encouraged by the results of the African Response latest survey showing
that a record 85% of South Africans believe that the country will be ready for
the world cup when the first ball is kicked off on June 11. This and the
increased rate in ticket sales, point to the growing enthusiasm of local soccer
fans who will throng the stadiums in large numbers.

We endorse remarks expressed by ANC Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe that
garnering the spirit of Ubuntu in welcoming foreign visitors to South Africa is
crucial. Let us make their trip the most memorable ever undertaken in Africa.

Ensuring that the soccer world cup remains on African soil means that we have
to give full support to Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Parreira and the team to
fight for their country’s glory just like the Springboks did with rugby.
