Jub Jub changes tune as drug evidence grows

  • The baby is his
  • Kicked out of recording studio
  • 'Stressed'

Jub Jub Maarohanye's lies are finally catching up with him. He is, he tells everyone, a Christian, and a devout one at that, who would never use drugs.

He has denied fathering children out of wedlock or being in a relationship with songstress Kelly Khumalo.

And he says he left a pay-TV channel's celebrity reality show because of a life-threatening rash affecting his genitals.

This week, as he stood in court fighting to get bail on charges of killing four schoolboys in what the state alleges was a drug-fuelled race down one of Soweto's busiest streets, Molemo Maarohanye finally started telling the truth - because it suited him.

The 30-year-old gospel rapper has vigorously denied reports in recent months that he is the father of the unborn child of songstress Kelly Khumalo, or that their Bassonia flat had burnt down just four days before the accident as they had burnt incense for good luck.

This week he told the court he would be becoming a father "any time from now" and that he had had to move back in with his parents in Naturena because his Bassonia flat had burnt down.

He also said he had walked off M-Net's Celebrity Survivor series in a bid to boost the show's ratings among African viewers.

Protea Magistrate's Court prosecutor Liezl van Jaarsveld was having none of it though. She put it to Maarohanye that he had been thrown off the pay channel's reality TV show after testing positive for drugs.

Maarohanye denied this vehemently.

"Ma'am, I really don't know what you guys are trying to do. I got tested. I have the papers. The only thing they found that I had was jaundice. I do not do drugs."

M-Net moved quickly, too, to deny any drug allegations.

"They all had medicals to deem them fit. A medical would have flagged that (drugs)," said spokeswoman Lani Lombard yesterday.

"Jub Jub left Survivor on his own. It was his decision as a celebrity contestant."

But the taint of hard drugs won't go away.

This week, as prosecutors fought to deny bail, the State told the court that preliminary urine tests done on the rapper and his co-accused Themba Tshabalala immediately after the fatal accident a fortnight ago had tested positive for cocaine and morphine.

Tshabalala was also over the legal alcohol limit.

The two had been speeding down Mdlalose Street in Protea Glen when their vehicles hit six schoolboys on their way home. Four died and two are in a critical condition in hospital.

Today the Saturday Star can reveal that on the day of the accident, Maarohanye was going to be banned from a recording studio that he had frequented. The ban was because of his alleged drug binges.

A source within the music industry, who did not want to be named, said Maarohanye was heading down a path of destruction. "He was always high when he came to the studio. It's not healthy, and it's dangerous to have someone like that around."

When an emotional Maarohanye took to the stand during his bail application, he said he did not know why he was being hung out to dry in public.

"Anybody can be involved in an accident. I don't understand why they are crucifying me. I am aware that some of them are my fans, but it was a pure accident."

He told the court he would do "anything to get my life back on track" - before breaking down in tears.

"I have been going through emotional stress. I need time from this whole thing. I was to be with my family and my unborn child. There has been a lot of media around my parents' place. I don't want anything to do with the media or anyone. I need peace and time with my unborn child. God is my saviour. God will protect me."

Commenting on the accident, he said: "What I know is that it's not the first time that it has happened.

"I didn't know I was going to be in an accident. Personally I do a lot of work for the youth. The Lord Almighty is looking at me, as this is a pure accident. I don't feel good. I send my condolences to the families."
