Secretary/Organiser
University of Cape Town’s Academics Union (UCTAU)
We invite applications from suitably qualified candidates for the above
position. The ideal candidate will have an interest in labour law and
employee relations with particular emphasis on the Higher Education
Sector, with a commitment to advance, protect, and defend the rights and
interests of all its members.
Responsibilities include:
· Administrative and organisational support to the
UCTAU President and Executive
o managing UCTAU meetings (of the Executive, of members and
with the University)
o supporting UCTAU committees and officers in their work
o advising the UCTAU Exco of deadlines
o supporting the financial administration
· Representation of the UCTAU at university
portfolio committees to advance UCTAU’s interest
· Membership administration
o managing recruitment drives
o maintaining a membership database
o supporting and advising members
o facilitating the UCTAU’s role in grievance procedures
o soliciting membership input on relevant issues
· Management of UCTAU Communications
o maintaining the website and the online VULA forum
o setting up seminars on critical issues
o producing and distributing the UCTAU’s newsletter
· Drive networking by liaising with:
o other unions
o other universities
o the Department of Labour
· Research on relevant topics, such as
international trends in Higher Education, Policies and Procedures as
well as
relevant statistics
Requirements include:
• A related tertiary qualification
• Two years of Employee Relations and Labour Law
experience
• Proven bookkeeping and financial administration
experience
• Research, analytical and report writing skills
• Knowledge of the Higher Education Sector and its
challenges
• Computer literacy (email, spreadsheets, graphics
and word processing)
• Strong written, oral and interpersonal
communication skills
• Strong networking skills with the ability to
build and maintain relationships
• Excellent organisation and planning skills with
the ability to work independently and in a team
• The ability to show initiative, innovation and
work under pressure
Union experience, a good theoretical knowledge of human resources
legislation and policies such as contract appointments, remuneration and
career pathing, in addition to experience in internet, web management,
and administration of discussion forums, will serve as further
recommendations for the position.
The remuneration package, including benefits, is negotiable between
R254 952 and R314 296 per annum and will be commensurate with
qualifications, experience and competencies.
