*The YCLSA strongly condemns the racist attacks on Farm workers in
Ventersdorp*

*12 April 2010*

The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) condemns the brutal
attacks, rape and torture of innocent farm workers, justified by reactionary
farmers as vengeance for the death of Eugene Terreblanche. This virulent
attack on workers is evidence that racial tensions and exploitation is still
a norm in Ventersdorp.

We warn those farmers not to play out their perverse fantasies of the dark
days of apartheid on black workers and that their actions have dire
consequences not only from the SAPS but as well as the immediate black
community which could opt to retaliate just as brutally. The case is in no
way a political case and such opportunistic theories must be down played as
they will further perpetuated unnecessary violence in Ventersdorp.

When our revolutionary Hero, Cadre Chris Hani was brutally slained by the
AWB, there was no call for revenge and it happened a time of political
turmoil and tension. This was a real political case with severe political
ramifications. Senior leaders of the SACP and ANC illustrated maturity and
discipline despite their anger and urge to avenge. The AWB and reactionary
white farmers should therefore stop sensationalising this trivial case
unnecessarily and attempting to turn into some conspiracy.

We urge the SAPS at national level to intervene in ensuring that there is
restoration of order and more especially, that spontaneous attacks on farm
workers must be curbed before they spiral out of control.

No one can be naive to the fact that racial harmony is still an illusion in
South Africa; however this does not prevent South Africans to strive towards
racial tolerance. This case should be treated as a normal murder case and
the white community of Ventersdorp, particularly those farmers that continue
with this disgusting behaviour should respect processes of the law.

We also call upon the Department of Labour and COSATU to intervene in
addressing the issue of farm worker exploitation as a sense of urgency as
this case has exposed that farm workers are still subjected to the same
ill-conditions that existed prior to 1994. This will assist in initiating a
dialogue process that will address both the causations as to why there has
been an increase in farm killings as well as the perpetual abuse of farm
workers.
