*Coalition wades into SABC clash* *Chantelle Benjamin, Business Day, Johannesburg, 4 June 2010*Intervention by Communications Minister Gen Siphiwe Nyanda in the dispute over the appointment of SABC's head of news would undermine the broadcaster's new board, says the Save Our SABC coalition.
The coalition, formed during a previous clash between an SABC board and former CEO Dali Mpofu, is made up of the Congress of South African Trade Unions , Freedom of Expression Institute and film and media experts.
It urged the minister to support the board rather than take control in the matter. It said that the SABC's reputation as an independent public broadcaster was also at stake.
"The board needs to report to the minister as to the plans it intends to take to rectify these corporate governance breaches, what disciplinary action it intends to take against those who have committed these breaches, and what plans it intends to put in place to begin to build the general public's shattered trust in the institution," the coalition said.
It was concerned that the minister would be involved in what it viewed as board decisions.
The coalition wanted "strong decisive action" taken by the board against chairman Ben Ngubane, who it felt had shown "flagrant disregard for good corporate governance".
The coalition has called for an urgent public hearing by the parliamentary portfolio committee into the corporate breaches at the SABC. It said the committee "needs to hold the SABC accountable".
