*YCLSA CONCERNED OF REPORTS THAT ZWELINZIMA VAVI WILL BE CHARGED BY THE ANC*

*06 June 2010*

The Young Communist League of South Africa (uFasimba) has been observing
with disappointment media reports that the General Secretary of Cosatu,
Zwelinzima Vavi, will be charged by the ANC for having contravened its code
of conduct as a member.

We note the fact that the ANC has neither confirmed or denied the existence
of such a decision, however, the fact that faceless ANC National Working
Committee members are consistently being quoted on the decision, presents an
opportunity and platform for us to engage with issues of discipline within
the Alliance.

In as much as matters of discipline of ANC members remain an internal and
constitutional matter between the member and the organization, we view this
as a frivolous and vindictive case by a faction within the ANC NWC who are
hell-bent to destroy the Alliance and anyone who seeks to expose corruption
and tenderpreneur tendencies.

The supposed decision was clearly pushed to try and embarrass Vavi and
Cosatu, on the one hand, and to ridicule the ANC disciplinary process in the
light of its ruling on Julius Malema. This is not just tit for tat childish
politics, but an attempt to turn COSATU and other structures of the MDM into
sub-committees of the ANC. The statement by Vavi presented at a press
conference, in the presence of other CEC members of COSATU was in no way an
attack on Individuals in their capacity as ANC Members.

If indeed there is such a decision, the YCL will openly and publicly oppose
it. We will equally mobilize other structures of the Mass Democratic
Movement to oppose such a decision as it will spell the end of the alliance
as we know it. We will also persuade the SACP, our mother body, to engage
with the ANC not to pursue this evidently opportunistic disciplinary action.

In the recent past, there have been disagreements between alliance partners,
and never were these used as a form of discipline against any member. There
have been worst of times within the alliance wherein even Cosatu and the
SACP went into the streets, and never has the ANC decided to take up
disciplinary action against any leader of the Alliance .

What is even worse is that Vavi was speaking out in support of one of the
ANC priority areas, which in this case is corruption, and calling on the ANC
and the Alliance to show leadership.

We support Cosatu’s call that in instances where there are allegations of
corruption, there needs to be investigations in order to deal with the
mentality that government ministers are generally corrupt leaders. We also
reiterate our call for the regulation of cabinet members in participating in
business as this inevitably leads to a conflict of interest. We reiterate
our call for all public representatives in and outside parliament not be
involved in business. They must choose between business or public
representation. They cannot be both capitalists and represent us at the
same. They are bound to use their access to state office to pursue their
individual capitalist interests, thus worsening the plight of the poor
generated by the capitalist system.

We respect the decision by Comrades Siphiwe Nyanda and Sicelo Shiceka to
seek legal relief against Zwelinzima Vavi and Cosatu, however this should be
what it is and that the ANC should not be dragged into presuming legal
action against Vavi. We are deeply concerned that our legal system and
Constitution is increasingly becoming a tool to be used by the monied to
silence the voices of the working class. Ordinary people’s rights are abused
on daily basis by corrupt people. The fight should never be against Vavi,
but against corruption.

We are worried that there is even a death threat against Vavi. It is
worrying that these threats surface now, in the light of Cosatu’s
determination to fight corruption. This is more worrying in the light of the
recent assassination of one of the SACP leaders – Bomba who had been at the
forefront in exposing corruption. Before we lose our confidence, we call on
the police to speedily investigate the death threat against Vavi and
speedily find the assassins of Bomba.
