*YCLSA-KZN statement on the unsullied attack towards the working * *class leadership in the province*
* * *06 June 2010* The Young Communist league of South Africa in the Province of KwaZulu Natal had learn with shock the discomfort amongst ANC-KZN leadership over the anti-corruption struggle, as led by the South African Communist Party. We see no direct link between Ithala Bank and the ANC PEC and we would like to encourage the SACP to further raise this matter in its forthcoming bilateral meeting with the ANC. The SACP must unashamedly intensify its anti- corruption struggle. The Group Chief Executive Officer of Ithala as noted by the media statement of both SACP and COSATU “got away with a written warning for what is seen as a very serious misconduct of committing procurement irregularities on a project worth R169 million rands. This act by the board of Ithala is taken as irresponsible and a massive cover-up through misuse of authority. It is regrettable that such corruption cover-up is receiving some form of political blessing by the public announcement by the MEC. The manner in which Bhombe Chitey obtains the tender at Ithala bears all the hallmarks of a fraudulent process.” This matter should not be creating any discomfort amongst ANC leadership as the ANC 2009 Policy Framework notes that amongst other things the ANC will *“Step up measures in the fight against corruption within society, the state and private sector, including measures to review the tendering system to ensure politicians do not tamper with the adjudication of tenders. Measures will also be taken to ensure transparent process of the tendering system as well as ensuring much stronger accountability of the public servants involved in tendering process”* thus if the SACP questions the “procurement irregularities on a project worth R169 million rands” it is well within the ANC election mandate to challenge corruption. Another point of concern is an attempt by some ANC leaders in KZN to single-out the Provincial Secretary of the SACP, comrade Themba Mthembu as a sole architect against certain senior ANC leaders in the province. We condemn such attempts with deserving contempt for we are convinced that the decisions of the SACP in the province as correctly represented by the Provincial Secretary are an outcome of a democratic and collective process of our beloved Party, as resolved in our last Provincial Council. Our correctly conceived program on the fight against corruption should not be mystified as an anti-ANC crusade. It should not be opportunistically confused by those who are hell-bent to silence the South African Communist Party in the province on articulating its positions on tendencies that seek to derail our uninterrupted struggle to build socialism in the terrain of the National Democratic Revolution and this should not be also linked with succession debates in any of the structures of our movement. Our fight against corruption is indeed directly linked with our revolutionary conviction to smash capitalism with all its enabling tendencies. We view corruption as direct impediment in the course of pushing back the gains of our democratic breakthrough. Corruption alienates the poor. Corruption disunites our movement. If some among the senior provincial leadership of the ANC know something that we do not know about the goings-on at Ithala Bank, they should do justice not only to themselves, but also to our beloved movement and the people of KwaZulu-Natal by cutting to the chase and do that which is right, they must tell us the truth. The ANC and Ithala Bank are two different organizations. The former prides itself of its historical revolutionary character dating back from 1912 in the undisputed course of national liberation as reinforced by its alliance with the then Communist Party of South Africa and the then South African Congress of Trade Union. The latter (Ithala Bank) represents one of those government entities with the task of enhancing economic development of our downtrodden masses that depend on the ANC to defend and advance such initiatives whenever the need arises. It therefore does not follow that whenever there is uproar of corruption in Ithala Bank, as unmasked by the SACP and COSATU, certain elements and individuals in the ANC seek to confuse this noble course as a fight against the ANC as an organization. As highlighted above, the ANC is vehemently opposed to crime and corruption, corruption is not an additional pillar of the NDR hence the ANC itself has prioritized a fight against it as a demonic confluence in our society. History will be the judge. The onslaught on those who are communists and who continue to be committed to the course of total liberation of the working class and the poor from the yoke of capitalism and its agents had always been characterized by anti-communist tendencies that immediately emerge after national liberation. The killing of Giacomo Matteotti in Italy, of Amicar Cabral in Guinea, of Salvador Allende in Chile, of Patrice Lumumba in Congo, Chris Hani in South Africa and many communist and left-leaning leaders all over the world including the death threats towards the General Secretary of the SACP Blade Nzimande and comrade Zwelinzima Vavi, the Secretary General of COSATU leaves us with no choice but to be convinced that our Provincial Secretary comrade Themba Mthembu will be targeted as there are “talks” in some of the corners of the province that he is “problematic” and he should be disciplined. We call upon all law enforcement agencies and the alliance itself to lead the anti-corruption struggle and protect those who are architects against corruption and anti-heroic tendencies by PPP’s (Pick-Pocketing-Politicians). We also call for the office of the Provincial Police Commissioner to consider security assessment on the safety of the SACP’s provincial secretary given the eminent threats on his life. “War unto War to end War” *For more details* *Contact Mafika Mndebele, * *YCL-SA KZN Provincial Spokesperson: 073 574 5953* -- Gugu Ndima +27 76 783 1516 -- Gugu Ndima +27 76 783 1516 -- You are subscribed.
