*Nkosi's death a loss for SA*

*Edward Tsumele, Sowetan, Johannesburg, 7 September 2010*

LEWIS Nkosi, long recognised as one of Africa's greatest literary figures, died on Sunday night at a Johannesburg hospice.

In recent years he commuted between Switzerland, where he had his family home, and Johannesburg, for business reasons.

A former Drum writer, he was still active in literature and was a well-known personality in Melville's coffee society in Johannesburg in recent years until a year ago when his health deteriorated after he suffered a stroke.

He is said to have recently completed a manuscript that is due to be published.

"He had completed writing a new novel, which was in the revision stage. He was also working on his memoirs," Sandile Ngidi, Nkosi's literary agent, said.

A close friend of Nkosi's, Raks Seakhosa, said: "The memorial service will be held at Museum Africa on Wednesday at 5.30pm and the funeral will take place on Friday in Durban."
