*Malema's tongue costs him*

/R50, 000 for 'insulting women'/

ANC Youth League president Julius Malema's loose tongue cost him R50, 000 yesterday.

This was the value of the assets seized by the sheriff of the court from one of his homes after he failed to pay a R50, 000 fine for saying that a woman whom President Jacob Zuma was accused of raping "enjoy[ed]" her time with him.

Zuma was acquitted in 2006.

The fine was imposed on Malema by the Equality Court after Malema said in a speech at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology that "when a woman didn't enjoy it, she leaves early in the morning.

"Those who had a nice time will wait until the sun comes out, request breakfast and ask for taxi money."

He was taken to court by the Sonke Gender Justice Network. The fine was to have been paid to People Against Woman Abuse (Powa) but Malema failed to come up with the money.

His lawyer, Tumi Mokwena, told Sapa yesterday that Malema would appeal against the attachment.

Malema was also ordered by the Equality Court to make an unconditional public apology for his remarks.

Reporters and photographers camped outside Malema's house in Sandton, Johannesburg, yesterday, but no sheriff came.

But Sonke's Bafana Khumalo confirmed that the sheriff took property from Malema.

"The sheriff doesn't give us the details of what was taken.

"Of interest to us is that the goods are valued at R50, 000, as the court ordered.

"The sheriff will now dispose of these assets and we will hand the money over to Powa," Khumalo said.

The sheriff of the court, Eunice de Kock, refused to speak to media, other than to say: "As long as the document is in the office of the sheriff, it is confidential."

Neither Malema nor his spokesman, Floyd Shivambu, could be reached for comment yesterday.
