*ANC Women’s League Statement, 1 February 2011* *Serving of sushi on women’s bodies is appalling*The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) strongly condemns the despicable practice of serving of sushi on bodies of half naked South African women. We call for an immediate stop to this foreign practice because it is an attack on the bodily integrity and dignity of women in our country.
We are appalled by this derogatory act of serving sushi on bodies of half naked women. We cannot allow such an insulting practice to be associated with the ANC or its cadres.
We strongly support remarks by ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe that the ANC is not in the business of nightclubs or selling liquor. We, therefore, want to put it categorically clear that we cannot allow attempts by anyone to drag the good name and credibility of the ANC to endorse a nightclub or its owners. This is an insult to the principles and values that the ANC stands for. It is a blatant attempt to undermine the selfless sacrifices made by all those who fought for the emancipation, respect and dignity of women in our country.
We are also very concerned about the negative impact of alcohol consumption and the habits associated with alcohol abuse, especially in a province like the Western Cape where there has been an established link between alcohol consumption and violence against women and children.
The ANCWL plans to arrange a meeting with ZAR owner, Mr Kenneth Kunene, to clarify his position on the practice of serving sushi on the bodies of half naked women.
Perhaps - as mothers - we need to intensify our campaign to educate our people on values as we find this practice appalling - a blatant attack on the dignity of all women in our nation.
