* “Defending the revolution, building new cadres through deepening
debates”*

*Isandlwane branch media statement*

The ANC YOUTH LEAGUE branch CONGRESS took place yesterday the 14th of April
2011 here AT Thusong Youth Centre starting at 6:30 until 21:00.The meeting
elected the leadership collective led by myself (George Mgoboli)). We also
agreed that we need to put more effort in the Local Government Elections
Campaign to make sure that young people comes out in numbers and vote
for ANC on the 18th May.,

We, the (Isandlwane branch) of the ANCYL in Alexandra, being the youth
league of the African National Congress (ANC) & consistent with its
strategic objective would like to reaffirm our commitment to the struggle
for the liberation of the black people in general and the African majority
in particular. This, we acknowledge inherently brings upon a responsibility
of ensuring that the noble and the legitimate struggles of the ANC and the
subsequent gains post 1994 are defended and sustained at all costs.

Defending and strengthening the democratic breakthrough requires a
particular kind of the ANC, an ANC:

· that remains entrenched in the society

· that provide a platform for all those that associate with its
strategic vision (Freedom Charter) to engage with its programmes with a view
to benefits all.

· That has the capacity and the integrity to lead society towards
the realisation of its strategic vision.

Having said this, it then requires a particular kind of organisational
capacity and discipline to ensure that the ANC as defined above is realised.
This ANC is not complete without its Leagues, it then becomes obvious that
the leagues of the ANC (particularly the ANCYL in this instance) need to
position itself consistent with its strategic role, that of making sure that
the ANC remains vibrant and relevant in its task of leading society.

Therefore the historical mandate of the ANCYL was and still remains the
mobilisation and organising or all young people behind a united, non racial,
non sexist, democratic and a prosperous vision. This it has always done and
must continue to do through building a cadre ship that understand the
discipline and the mandate of the ANC. It must also be ANCYL that
understands its strategic relationship with the ANC, that, whilst robustly
it continues to engage with ANC through organisational structures and
protocols, it will defend the ANC, its policies and its programmes against
those who seek to manipulate these for their selfish interest.

As a branch, having been part of the programmes of the ANCYL since the 2008
conference in Bloemfontein, the level of organisational discipline never
improved from that experience. The current NEC of the ANCYL never created a
platform to objectively engage with issues that confronts young people
broadly but rather focused on issues aimed at advancing narrow selfish
interest and trying to legitimise those using the Freedom Charter /
Empowerment as the basis for those arguments.

Since we have elected the leadership, the BEC have also agreed that we must
immediately contact the regional office in relation to the discussion
documents so that we go the congress with a full POLITICAL mandate and not
as voting cows

It is on those bases (amongst others) that as the Isandlwane branch we call
upon a change of leadership in the ANCYL NEC and bring upon the leadership
collective led by Cde Lebohang Maile. We firmly believe under his leadership
the ANCYL will be able to regain its lost credibility and integrity amongst
the young people, this will further ensure that the ANC leads society with
even a much bigger moral authority amongst the people.

We believe Cde Maile is tried and tested leader having led COSAS at NATIONAL
LEVEL AS PRESIDENT, YOUTH LEAGUE Province and his experience of government
will bring back what the organization is lacking politics of young people
and also with his track record ,Youth Development will find expression in
all sectors.
