*YCLSA Eastern Cape press release 28/06/2011*

The Young Communist League of South Africa [uFasimba] in the Eastern Cape
Province has learnt with great shock and concern the brutal murder of a
Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University student *Miss Tshepiso “Promise”
Sithole*. This came to us as a great shock that a young woman who had have
left Gauteng to attain higher education in the Eastern Cape so that she can
contribute with her technical capacity to her beloved country that is in
dire need of her intellectual capacity is no more. We extend our deepest
condolences to the Sithole family and the student fraternity at large.

We condemn this brutal killing of the young life. What has perplexed us most
as the organisation is to learn that the suspect is her boyfriend who is
understandably older than her as he was her high school teacher. This if
proven to be correct by the law authorities it will demonstrate what we have
always been raising that patriarchy still exists in our country even post
the 1994 democratic dispensation. It is becoming categorically clear that
there are still men out there who think that they own women and that woman
must live by their arrogant narrow rules and regulations. We trust that the
authorities will arrest the suspect in this case as soon as possible.

The YCLSA in the province is deeply concerned by the challenges faced by
young people in the institutions of higher learning; we believe that this
incident would have been avoided if the students were allocated with
affordable student residential areas within the university premises. The
current challenge with the student residential areas is the exorbitant fees
that are inaccessibly particularly to those coming from working class
background which forces them to leave in communes outside the varsity.

The above mentioned challenge is but one of most challenges that are faced
by South African students. We understand that education is the societal
responsibility so all progressive social organs and working class formations
should work hand and glove in making sure that our education system is made
better.
