*NUM Media Release, 4 July 2011 * ** ** *NUM throws its weight behind NUMSA and CEPPAWU on wage demands*The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) fully supports the demands made by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) and the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union to their various employers.
The demands made to the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of South Africa (SEIFSA) of a 13% hike in wages as well as those made by CEPPAWU of a similar percentage are more than reasonable. Headline inflation is around 4,6% whilst food and fuel inflation are far higher.
"We appeal to the employer bodies in the steel, engineering, paper, print and chemicals to accede to these reasonable demands" says Frans Baleni, the NUM General Secretary.
"We hope that employers in the mining industry will not follow this fatal error of judgment on the part of these terrible metal, steel, chemical and related employers" says Baleni.
The NUM calls on both NUMSA and CEPPAWU to intensify the battle against the unscrupulous exploiters with the knowledge that mine, energy and construction workers are behind them.
"There should be no going back in our fight for a living wage. It is not negotiable to earn a decent wage, it is a "must deliver". Workers walk many kilometers to work as they cannot afford public transport and live in shacks. An injury to one is an injury to all" says Baleni.
