*Pupil misses school – but doesn’t know why*

*Botho Molosankwe, The Star, Johannesburg, 31 August 2011*

HE MISSED an entire school day to be among stone throwers who kept dodging rubber bullets and a water cannon.

The group were Julius Malema’s supporters, who had gathered at Beyers Naudé Square, fighting with the police. Although part of the gathering, 17-year-old Khutso Ngoepe did not know why he was there. Nor did he know what the crowd had gathered at the square for.

The only reason he was there, he said, was because early yesterday morning, he and his schoolmates were in classes in a school in Thokoza when Congress of SA Students (Cosas) members carrying planks stormed in and told them to go to Joburg.

He said there was no way any of the pupils would have refused to join the Cosas members. Even the principal and teachers could not have stopped Cosas from entering the school.

“They had planks today and pupils were scared of being beaten up. My parents do not know I am here. They should be angry when they find out.

“But I am happy that I came, at least I know Joburg as I only see it on TV,” he said.
