KZN ANCYL demands answers

The ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal says it will insist that the league's national leadership give reasons for why it stripped the provincial branch of its powers today.

It says it received a letter from its national office this afternoon, saying it had "withdrawn" the powers of provincial leaders.

Last month, KZN youth league leaders refused to send members to protest at the disciplinary hearing of the league's president - Julius Malema - who is charged with bringing the party into disrepute.

There has also been speculation that KZN structures are backing President Jacob Zuma to be re-elected as party president next year, while national leaders have apparently decided to back other candidates.

The KZN league's Sboniso Duma says they are meeting with their members tonight, and the provincial executive committee will decide on their next move.

"What we are concerned about is the factional approach that was taken by national leadership. They just treat the organisation as if it's a trust, they are using a very factional approach. The decision is taken at national level, but there is nothing informing this decision. So, we'll wait - we'll wait and see what their reasons are and they must come and give us the details."
