NUMSA to Present Xstrata's Revised Wage Offer to its Members

22 October 2011

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has been in serious
discussions to intensify its strike action at Xstrata. Early this afternoon, 22
October 2011, after serious and high level discussions led by our General
Secretary, Comrade Irvin Jim, forced the Xstrata ruling oligarchy to apply cool
heads and soberness, and a revised wage settlement offer worth to be considered
by our members was tabled.

The National Offices Bearers (NOB’s) of NUMSA then saw its fit to exercise
leadership by instructing our members at Xstrata to converge next week Monday
24 October 2011, Rusternburg CBD, North-West province. The mandate of the
planned gathering will be to present the revised offer from the employers for
our members’ consideration. The gathering to be led by Regional leadership and
Shopstewards will allow our members through a democratic and transparent
process to engage the offer with an intention of either accepting or rejecting
it. This exercise is a true expression of worker control and people’s power in
action.

The revised offer will only be communicated publicly once our members are privy
and informed about it in detail. This does not mean the strike action has been
suspended, neither does it gives Xstrata a profit-driven license to coerce our
members to report back for work on Monday. Xstrata is duty bound to allow
internal processes to unfold without any undue interference, any failure by
Xstrata to heed this warning, they will face hostile resistance from our
members through militant action on the streets.

We call on our members at Xstrata to attend the planned gathering in order to
engage with the revised offer. Workers are requested to converge outside
Rusternburg Taxi rank.
