***SADTU says no to Teacher Performance Appraisal in its current form*

The South African Democratic Teachers Union says it rejects the Teacher Performance Appraisal in its current form. SADTU says that learner performance should not be included as part of appraising educators. This is one of the many resolutions -- ranging from education to political, organisational and labour matters - taken during SADTU's three-day National General Council held at Velmore Conference Centre in Erasmia from 25 until 27 November, 2011.

The delegates agreed unanimously that learner performance should not be linked to educator appraisal and that there should be one appraisal system for all school-based educators. They resolved that the matter should be discussed further at a Policy Conference on Labour and Education to be held by March next year.

The Union reiterated its commitment to Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign (QLTC) and condemned the bad behaviour of a minority of teachers - particularly those who abuse learners sexually.Such behavior brought the profession into disrepute.

On political matters, the NGC expressed support for the disciplinary action taken by the ANC in disciplining the current Leadership of the ANCYL. It also condemned the conduct that is contradictory to the discipline of the ANC by some of the ANC NEC members, and supports the resolution of the ANC NGC on organisational discipline in defence of the unity and cohesion of the ANC.

On ANC Centenary celebrations, the NGC resolved that the National Executive Committee should adopt a programme through which all structures would be mobilized and resourced with specific timelines in order to contribute to the achievement of the ANC's one million membership goal.

On international relations, the NGC resolved that the Union should create international partnerships by promoting international solidarity programmes that are based on SADTU's core belief system. SADTU supports teachers and public servants of Libya in the transformation of their country. The meeting resolved that SADTU would mobilise all MDM structures to condemn NATO's attitude towards Libya and promote the resolution of African problems by Africans.

The Union also resolved that it would campaign for the adoption of inflationary system that ensures a balanced and true reflection of the inflation rate in the country that is biased to the working class and the poor.

SADTU also wish to congratulate its former Eastern Cape Secretary Fezeka Loliwe who was elected as Vice President for Sport, Arts and Culture during the NGC.

The NGC also saw the graduation of 70 SADTU members -- including regional, provincial and national office bearers and negotiators - who completed a two year practical labour course through the Nelson Mandela University. The course, fully sponsored by SADTU is an indication of the Union's commitment to skilling and development of members.
