This comrade, Rune, is an NGO-ist who has forgotten that before
alliance, there must be organisation, meaning popular democratic mass
organisation, and not theforeign- and bourgeois-funded NGOs that
constitute the coalitions of so-called"civil society".
As for the rest, if this document did not have a few references to South
Africa it could easily be mistaken for a British Eurocommunist document
of the 1970s or the 1980s.
As such it is reformist in general and "economist" in Lenin's sense of
the word.
This line of thinking if expanded would lead its protagonists to propose
the liquidation of the Party in favour of so-called "civil society", as
happened in Britain.
Please note that the term "civil society" was coined by Karl Marx in the
1840s as, in the original German, "*bürgerlichen Gesellschaft*", meaning
literally "Bourgeois Society". See for example the 9th Thesis on
Feuerbach, in the *Theses on Feuerbach
<http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1845/theses/index.htm>*, the
very first document of proper Marxism, written in 1845.
There is no part of bourgeois society that you can call "civil society"
and say that it is not bourgeois.
The Deputy National Chairperson of the YCLSA should not be propagating
this kind of liberal class-neutral anti-class-politics line.
"Civil society" is just as counter-revolutionary now as it was in Karl
Marx's time, and the YCL should be saying so.
The YCL should loudly oppose the NGO-isation of the mass workers'
movement, particularly where COSATU is concerned, and it should not be
supporting any treacherous compromise of the workers' shield with
bourgeois-funded stooge apparatuses.
This document of Rune's is way too long to be responded to in every
point. So let Karl Marx take some of the strain. A very direct response
to Cde Rune's point 5.4 can be found in Part 1 of *The Critique of the
Gotha Programme
<http://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1875/gotha/ch01.htm>*. The
YCL should not be "Lassallean". It should be studying the meaning of The
Critique of the Gotha Programme and instructing the present-day
Lassalleans about it, opposing them, contradicting them, and not
supporting them.
The YCL should also be instructing the ANC Youth League about The
Critique of the Gotha Programme, because it contains the answers to the
phony demagogic calls for "nationalisation".
There is no "millennium in the democratic republic" (see The Critique of
the Gotha Programme) but there is necessity in the expansion of mass
democratic organisation of the people for all purposes, but especially
as the working class. This expansion is being neglected by COSATU at
federation level, and it looks like it is being neglected by the YCL.
There is no advance to socialism without the expansion of mass popular
democratic organisation and the creation of organs of people's power.
This is the task of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR) and it is
the reason why the NDR is described as the direct road to socialism (Cde
Khaya please note).
Without the formation of a mass political Subject of History there is no
revolution, and no socialism.
If you want to run after "civil society" you have been "sold a dummy",
comrades. "Civil society" is not mass popular democratic organisation
but it is a bought fake substitute bourgeois fong-kong spaza version,
loved only by the bourgeoisie, its lackeys, and some of the demagogues.
Lastly, please, comrades, learn to write in _prose_, and not in numbered
points, or bullet points or arrow points. If you don't know what prose
is, please look it up.
